The InteliSalud system is designed for public and private medical service providers, including pharmacies. It uses smart cards and point-of-sale terminals to enable the capture and storage of medical data, enabling the medical professional to easily consult and update patient information, even when offline.

The InteliSalud smart card allows the patient to carry his own case history in his pocket or wallet. The card contains a secure memory which stores emergency data, clinical history, prescriptions, medical conditions, current treatments and personal data. Access is controlled by biometric authentication both by the patient and the doctor (certain data such as allergies is available to emergency services with less stringent access controls).

Using this technology, which is designed to work offline even in areas with poor infrastructure, InteliSalud conveys the following benefits:

• Complete portability, as all relevant patient information is held on the card and can be easily conveyed between medical service providers.
• Reliability: the data on the card cannot be altered by third parties. 
• Secure storage of medical records (diagnostics, lab results, prescriptions etc.) which can only be accessed by authorized personnel.

• Cost reductions due to the elimination of paper-based prescriptions and lab results. 
• Fraud prevention due to precise control of prescription fulfillment by pharmacies. Pharmacies are also better able to monitor inventory.
• Banking network support for paying consultation costs, pharmacies and test laboratories. This can be prepaid or postpaid (debit or credit). An electronic purse option is also available. 
• Extensible information system to allow incorporation of new features or provider-specific applications.
• Easy installation and use.

InteliSalud is currently in use by several health providers in Venezuela.
